In this weeks episode, we start the final book of the Torah. Deuteronomy, known in the Hebrew as D'varim, which means "words", is the recollection of Moses of all that had taken place from the time that they crossed the Yam Suf (Red Sea), until now. This we week we wrap up the book of Numbers. The hot point for this week was Israel's vengeance on Midian. Interesting that prior to the events of last weeks parashah, Israel had no issue with Midian, but due to them listening to the foolish counsel of Ba'alam, they become a foe to them. Pinchas is a very interesting parashah. He was known to be a person that was very zealous for the things of YHVH. He was the grandson of Aaron, and as such, was in line to inherit the priesthood after his father Eleazar. He is best known for his actions taken when YHVH sent a plague to destroy the people for so easily being enticed by the Midianite women to participate in their paganistic practices. In this weeks parasha, we discuss the 12 spies who were sent to spy out the land. It was an exciting time, in that the Israelites were finally going to step into the promise that was given to the patriarchs. Although still learning what it is to trust YHVH, the people really had problems in that area, and adding to this struggle, having to deal with the negative report of 10 of the 12 spies. In this weeks parasha, Moshe does a census for the Levites and based on the lineage, gives everyone their area of responsibility as it related to temple duties. Moshe also explains the laws dealing with women who have husbands that have reason to believe that their wife has been unfaithful.
